1ST INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE SYMPOSIUM

OF THE DEPARTMENT OF WESTERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Troia Cultural Center, Çanakkale / Merkez

"CULTURE"

CALL FOR PAPERS

“Troy, a city that once stood in glory, where the sun kissed its walls and the winds carried tales of valor.”

-Virgil, The Aeneid

It is our honour to welcome you to the First International Undergraduate Symposium of the department of Western Languages and Literatures at COMU, held in the historic city of Çanakkale (Troy)—a land steeped in history and sanctified by sacrifice. Residing in this city, with its profound historical and cultural heritage, has inspired us to explore the theme of culture for this symposium.

Once home to the ancient Trojan people, this land now allows us to appreciate its enduring beauty and significance, fostering a deep connection to our cultural inheritance. This symposium seeks to investigate the intricate interplay between culture and literature, acknowledging their mutual influence and transformative power.

Organized by undergraduate students of the English Language and Literature Department at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, this event aspires to showcase scholarly works that intertwine cultural and literary studies. The central aim is to create a platform for exchanging diverse perspectives on culture, building intellectual bridges across disciplines and geographical boundaries.

We warmly invite our peers to submit papers exploring the multifaceted theme of culture in its myriad forms. By fostering a dialogue on this universal topic, we hope to enrich our understanding of cultural narratives and their intersections with literature.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Culture and Language

  • Cultural Racism

  • Gender Roles in Different Cultures

  • Cultural Extinction

  • Cultural Corruption

  • Cultural Identity

  • Queer Culture

  • Cultural Representation in Literature

  • Cultural Adaptation

  • Cultural Imperialism

  • Native Culture

  • Culture and Civilization

  • Societal Norms and Values
