PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Dates: July 2 through August 11, 2023
The Institute on Contemporary American Literature will examine how major contemporary writers, schools, and movements reflect the U.S. literary canon. The Institute will also explore the diverse communities and voices that constitute the American literary landscape and expose participants to writers who are establishing new directions for American literature. The Institute will cover a variety of contemporary American writers and writing and suggest how the themes explored reflect larger currents within contemporary U.S. society and culture. Specific program components may include meetings or workshops with current American authors, literary agents, and a field study to an Indian reservation in Montana, as well as a visit to The New Yorker Magazine, the New York Library, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Congressional Arts and Humanities Caucus in New York City and Washington, D.C.
The six-week program includes a four-week academic residency at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, and an integrated study tour of up to two weeks in New York City and Washington, D.C.
Candidates should be made aware that they've been selected for an intensive and rigorous academic Institute, and that they are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the program.
